Impersonal and Irritating

I report to 2 different people and they have both been fairly detached since I started, hence the lack of responsibilities that I have. One of them has never responded to any of my e-mails since I’ve started working here roughly 2 months ago. Then, yesterday, he went to check his snail-mail box, which happen to be right behind my desk. As an after-thought, and obviously so, he turns to me and says, “Hey Ad Guy. How’s it going? I came to check on you.”

I take this as a cue for me to update him on everything that I’ve been working on over the past 2 weeks since I’ve last sat down and spoken with him even though I’d rather talk to him about more general issues since I so rarely see him. Then he asks me if I’ve been helping Sarah, the previously mentioned girl who is the same level as me, yet is like a thorn in my side. The question confuses me and I don’t understand why he’s asking. My response is a simple “no,” and I keep moving to the next topic. Why would he think that I would be ‘helping’ my counterpart? I would cover her in an emergency, but I’m not her assistant. In retrospect, maybe I should have probed a little and asked him to clarify the question, but then again maybe letting things be was the best solution.
